We are one of a very small number of Electrical Training providers in the UK, that can offer all the electrical courses and assessments required to go from a complete beginner to a fully Qualified Electrician without having to visit another training or assessment centre.
Electrical Courses Ltd is a City & Guilds approved training provider and NET Approved AM2 centre based in Cambridge, which was founded and ran by fully qualified Electricians. We specialise in helping adult trainees to make their first steps in the Electrical Industry by gaining qualifications that are highly recognised by Electrical contracting firms across the UK.
Since 2013 we have helped thousands of aspiring electricians to achieve qualifications which enabled them to gain employment in the Electrical industry. We have also trained new and experienced Electricians so that they can gain the more advanced qualifications such as the 18th Edition, EV Charging and Inspection and Testing.
In the UK there is an obvious demand for electricians and whilst Apprenticeships fulfil a lot of that demand, it would never be enough without adult trainees also known as Electrical Improvers gaining employment in the industry. Our training provider was first set up because of a lack of training opportunities for anyone aspiring to become an Electrician without going down the four year Apprenticeship route. We have always been very keen on delivering the right type of training and recognisable qualifications that can be seen as a good equivalent to an Apprenticeship and we call this the Electrical Improver Route.
What qualifications and assessments are taken during the Electrical Improver Route?
There are three main qualifications and one assessment required to be achieved in the Electrical Improver route and these are:
- The level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installations (2365)
- The level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installations (2365)
- The level 3 NVQ Portfolio in Electrical Installations (2357-44)
- AM2 assessment
How long does it take to train as an adult to become Electrician with Electrical Courses Ltd?
On Average it can take up to 2 and a half years to become fully qualified and obtain the ECS Gold Card with our support and training. The first two steps mentioned above which are the Level 2 & 3 Diplomas (2365) are completed in our training centre over two blocks of 8 weeks full time. This can also be done with some training providers and Colleges on evenings or weekends but then the duration would be between 2-3 years.
The level 2 & 3 Diplomas are known as technical qualifications and would teach all the basic underpinning theory and skills an Electrician would use in the workplace. These qualifications would help a new entrée gain employment with a contractor as an Electrical Improver.
Once in employment the Electrical Improver can start their final phase of their training by completing the Work Based Level 3 NVQ in Electrical Installations (2357) and AM2 3 day assessment. The Level 3 NVQ is a portfolio-based qualification, requiring the Electrical Improver to gather lots of various types of evidence from the work they are completing on the job. The Level 3 NVQ portfolio can take anywhere from 5 months to two years to complete and we run this remotely, meaning that the candidates do not have to attend any lessons in the centre.
Towards the end of the level 3 NVQ being completed the Electrical Improver would need to then complete the final 3 day assessment called the AM2. The AM2 is also a requirement of the Level 3 NVQ.
Successful completion of the above qualifications and assessments will allow a person to obtain the JIB ECS Gold Card as an Installation Electrician and to be recognised as qualified Electrician in the UK.
What other qualifications do we offer?
Whilst we specialise in helping adults become Electricians, we do also offer the other main qualifications and assessments that are required by electricians and these include:

- The Level 3 Award in Inspection and Testing (2391)
