Lighting and the Circular Economy Conference

Lighting and the Circular Economy Conference poster

On 24th March Recolight are hosting a conference to highlight how the lighting industry can adopt Circular Economy principles. The event, which takes place in London Docklands, is intended to highlight the commercial opportunities in ending waste and obsolescence for lighting products.  The conference reflects the increased need for the industry to deal with the impact of its products and practices on the environment. The one-day discussion will bring together Government, manufacturers, specifiers, and end users to discuss the steps that all must take to improve their environmental performance.  Delegates will also hear of the legislation and standards that is likely to drive these requirements. Why this is important to lighting Transformation to a circular economy is increasingly being seen as essential if manufacturing is to be sustainable.  This will become ever more important as demand for resources rises, and energy costs increase. With changes to legislation, lighting producers should start considering how some of the principles might be included in the products they design and manufacture.  The earlier companies start, the more likely they are to be able to meet/exceed the new requirements. Those companies that have embraced a circular approach are likely to be more competitive. A conference designed by lighting industry experts Recolight has worked with leading lighting industry experts to design an agenda covering all aspects of the Circular Economy for lighting. The conference will be introduced and chaired by Ray Molony, Independent Consultant to the Lighting Industry. “I can’t imagine any topic that’s timelier and more urgent than this one,’ said Ray Molony. ‘Across the industry I’m seeing a real willingness to contribute to the wider decarbonisation of the economy. But our endeavours need to be joined up, and that’s why this event is a really important start of the conversation. I’mdelighted to chair the conference and am really looking forward to the debate.” The programme for the day  The programme starts by introducing the Circular Economy, learning about the opportunities and arecyclers perspective. Defra, LightingEurope and Recolight will cover legislation; what you need to do now and future legislation for the UK and the EU. John Bullock of The Light Review will challenge participants to be more sustainable. We have a panel discussion led by Ray Molony exploring the perspective of end users. How can they be incentivised to use lighting that minimises material use and is both recyclable and reusable? The programme rounds off with presentations from lighting designers and lighting producers who have adopted  circular economy principles  into their projects and products.   Book your Circular Economy conference place Recolight are a not-for profit organisation, funded by Lighting Producer Members. The conference is also operated on a not-for-profit basis, and any surplus will be donated to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. A WEEE lamp update

A WEEE lamp update - Recolight Balcan

Visiting trade shows across the country, Recolight have learnt that disposing of waste electricals and lighting can be a headache for contractors. The Waste Electronic and Electrical Regulations were introduced to the UK back in 2007, but many contactors we spoke to either weren’t aware of them or didn’t know how to use them.  Recolight is a not for profit WEEE Compliance scheme, set up and funded by the lighting industry to manage a free lamp recycling service. If you collect 1000 lamps each quarter, the container and collection is free too. This is great for contractors carrying out a large re-lamp project, but not if you’ve only got a small number of lamps in your van. Recolight can still help though, as we have a UK network of 850 drop-off points. Search the map on the Recolight website to find the closest one, and then simply drop off your lamps between jobs. It’s free, but you do need to take a consignment note with you.  A consignment note is an Environment Agency requirement. They’re used to track the movement of hazardous waste. There are three copies, one to leave at the drop-off point, one for you, and one for your customer (where you pick up the waste from). The benefit to you, is that you can prove to your customer that you’re doing the right thing, and if you were to be stopped for a spot check by the Environment Agency, you are compliant. You will find guidance on the Recolight website to help you with consignment notes,  WEEE storage exemptions, and waste carrier licences.

Recolight celebrates 300 Million recycling milestone by launching extended service offering

Recolight celebrates 300 Million recycling milestone by launching extended service offering

Recolight, the UK’s leading lighting WEEE compliance scheme has announced a major milestone having funded the recycling of 300 million fluorescent & LED lamps and luminaires since the WEEE regulations were implemented in 2007. This is enough waste to fill the Royal Albert Hall ten times. Driving up the lamp WEEE recycling rate Recolight is unique amongst UK WEEE compliance schemes for having the only dedicated open collection point network for consumer and business waste fluorescent and LED lamps. With 3000 collection points, the Recolight network contributes to the continuing increase in the UK’s lamp recycling rate – up from 39.5% in 2012 to 48.5% in 2017. Nigel Harvey, Chief Executive of Recolight said, “Our Members can be very proud that they have helped to achieve this 300 million milestone; it is they that have made it possible and it is a testament to their dedication to improve lighting recycling in the UK. Their role is helping the UK to meet the national recycling targets set out in the recast WEEE directive.” Having recycled more lamps, LEDs and luminaires in total than all other UK WEEE schemes combined, Recolight can claim, with some justification, to be the leading WEEE compliance scheme for lighting. Extending the Recolight recycling offering Recolight has extended their recycling service to collect more waste electricals covered by the WEEE regulations. As a non-profit orgainsation, Recolight can provide this at a competitive cost. Suzanne Castine, marketing manager at Recolight added, “It’s great to be in a position to offer this complete WEEE recycling service.  Feedback from our collection partners told us they wanted more. The success of our lamp and luminaire service over the years has made this possible. “ Recolight is exhibiting at Recycling & Waste Management trade show at the NEC, Birmingham on 12 to 13 September. The Recolight team will be on stand 4M32 to show how the extended recycling services can help.
